Q. I love Gulf seafood, but is it safe to eat right now?

A. Wild caught Gulf seafood is arguably on of the safest and most widely tested foods on the market. Since last years oil spill, federal and state officials have been monitoring the waters from which seafood is harvested. According to the ongoing studies, there have not been indications that the petrochemicals from the spill have tainted or entered the Gulf food system.

Many people have valid concerns but it is important to note that wild caught Gulf seafood that makes it's way to distributors, grocery stores, restaurants, and ultimately onto your plate, is safe to eat.

Q. Where can I go to learn more about Birding in South Mobile County?

A. Dauphin Island is one of the most popular places on the Gulf Coast for birding during spring migration and fall migrations. With over 347 species identified on the island, Dauphin Island hosts about 85 percent of the birds on the state list. As a classic migrant trap it can be an overwhelming experience during a spring "fall out" when birds literally fall from the sky after making a 600 mile trek across the Gulf of Mexico from the Yucatan Peninsula! Birding can be equally good in the fall and bird enthusiasts generally frequent the island during these two seasonal migrations.

The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail begins on Dauphin Island and snakes it way through the (7) island bird sanctuaries before finding it's way at last to Bayou La Batre. All told, South Mobile County is a great place for birders, or for anyone interested in the rugged appeal of connecting with nature in a truly unique and worry-free coastal environment. Along the Dauphin Island/Bayou La Batre trail rental homes are made available and motels are conveniently located for birding, as are several excellent restaurants.

Recognitions:

- In April 2010 Birder's World ranked Dauphin Island ninth on their list of favorite places on the continent to watch warblers ("Song Birds").

- "America's Birdiest Coastal Community," 2009
